With my job asking us to work nearly every weekend. I spend a lot of time at work. I’m always trying to score a weekend off whenever I can. Working 12 hour shifts at least 4 to 5 days a week, plus weekends, gets old very quickly. A little relaxation, and recreation is always welcomed.

When I do land a weekend off I always try to figure out what activity I’m going to do for the weekend to celebrate being off work. Here are 3 fun things to do with a weekend off.
3 Fun Weekend Activities

1. The Riverwalk
A weekend walk along the river, at the Columbus Riverwalk Trail. Having enough time to walk the Riverwalk is always a nice, and healthy activity to fill your weekend. It’s a 5.5 mile roundtrip. Being 2.75 miles each way winding along the Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway.
Meandering along the Tenn Tom as it’s known amongst the locals. The Riverwalk offers some amazing scenic natural views. Along with an assortment of wildlife. Including many varieties of birds, deer, fox, opossum, armadillos, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, frogs, lizards, turtles, and even the occasional snake.

The Riverwalk is covered by nice tree top canopy. Providing shade for most of the Riverwalks length on warm days
Not to mention it’s close proximity to some really good restaurants like Harvey’s, or Huck’s Place. Both of which are really good.
Dining
For this particular weekend we chose Huck’s Place, which is a Cajun Restaurant. If your looking for some fantastic weekday dining, on Thursday’s Hucks Place has local artists playing, and performing with Live Music.

Total Cost of Riverwalk* & Dinner for two: $80
*Riverwalk is Free, cost included was only for Dinner and Tip!
2. TopGolf

Being as far from a Golf Expert as you could possibly get. My partner and I just wanted to play a little TopGolf for fun. We had been trying to land a Saturday Evening Weekend Round of TopGolf at the Birmingham AL location for quite awhile.
Showing up once as a Walk-In on Saturday they told us the wait time was 4 hours. Not wanting to wait that long we left, and decided to make a weekend reservation. What we discovered is that it’s easy to make a reservation Sunday thru Friday, but Saturdays are quite difficult.
You have to be able to plan 3 weekends or more in advance to land a Saturday Reservation online. Which is next to impossible with my job, which is liable to require me to work any given weekend. Not to mention my partner is only off every other weekend.
We discovered the best thing to do is download the TopGolf App, become a member, and join the wait list on Saturdays instead of trying to make a reservation. After joining the wait list and getting on the highway for what they said was going to be a 4 hour wait we were on our way.
Only to be messaged by TopGolf 2 1/2 hours later while we were still an hour away that our Bay was ready, and we had 15 minutes to check in. After canceling our first spot, we rebooked again whiles on the Highway hoping to get there by the time our next Bay was ready. Unfortunately Birmingham Traffic had other plans.
Birmingham Traffic

Determined to catch our next TopGolf Bay, and not cancel again for the second time tonight. After sitting in traffic for an hour, I got out of the vehicle to get a better view. Finding a turn around spot an 1/8 of a mile ahead in the median to catch an alternate route, and detour around the Hwy 20/59 Traffic.
Let’s Play!
Through much perseverance, and determination we finally made the TopGolf facility before they called our Bay ready.

Not knowing much about the game selection, we booked the 1 1/2 hour of play option. Thankfully they have the Game Selection sheet breakdown menu at each Bay for you.

Dining
The TopGolf facilities are equipped with their own restaurant. Making ordering food quite easy. Although when busy, as it was Saturday it can take them quite awhile to get your food to you.
It took us a little over 40 minutes to receive our food. By the time the waiter brought us our food, it was already cold. Meaning the kitchen had probably had it ready for quite some time, but the waiter was so busy they didn’t get back to our food while it was still hot. You can check out their Full Menu Here

Total Cost of TopGolf & Dining for two: $150
3. A Movie
The last activity on this list is probably the easiest, and definitely one of the most common, Dinner and a Movie. The only place where the snacks cost more then the activity!
With my partner being a big Jurassic Park Fan. There was really no way of me escaping going to see the last movie in the Jurassic Park series Jurassic World: Dominion.
Which we chose to go to a local regional movie theatre chain in Columbus MS called the Malco. Which has been in business since 1915, over 100 years in the Southeastern United States.

We both thought the movie was pretty good. Especially bringing back some of the original cast from the first Jurassic Park Movie. Also just to save you a little time. There is no After Credit Scene at the end of the movie. The movie itself is 2 1/2 hours long.
Dining
After the movie my partner, and I decided to try some Fast Food for dinner. As we both wanted to try out the new Arby’s Wagyu Steakhouse Burger. Wagyu is a premium beef derived from a Japanese Native Cattle breed prized for it’s meat marbleization. It’s claimed to have the perfect fat to meat ratio. Leading to an almost natural buttery taste to the meat.
For the record, maybe my expectations were to high for this burger. Neither of us saw anything extraordinarily special about it, at least not enough so to make us go out of our way to obtain one. A.K.A – Flash back to the Chicken Sandwich Wars. It tasted like what you would expect of a typical fast food burger. 🤷🏽♂️

Total Cost of Movie & Dining for two: $70
